What do you think? Does this method deserve a more in-depth test?
I think if you do this, in order to get consistent you probably would need to spend more than 10 seconds in each off-axis direction Possibly a lot more. As-is, the technique does not seem to be effective enough to overcome the differences in smoothness between one switch and another from the same batch.
I don't think lube inconsistency is a factor either, since Cherry only lubes the leaf, and stem to leaf friction can be compared with on-axis key presses. All of the switches in this test already felt very smooth during on-axis presses, smooth enough as to be indistinguishable one from another. Yeah, I think you'd need to get more into the thousands or ten-thousands worth of cycles to really wear them in well. Edit: So more in the "minutes" range of time.
Also, if we're just trying to simulate rapid break-in, could we just load up a board and just slowly run the massager over the whole thing?
Or is the corner massaging supposed to break things in faster? I suppose part of it would be how much force you are imparting with the massager. Wouldn't want to damage the plate or pcb of course. Come on man. I draw the line at massaging my switches. I mean I don't, I'll do it but come on. What am I supposed to say when someone calls me and asks whatcha doing? For me it's more of a 'getting the switches within a level I deem acceptable' you won't make a cherry mx black as smooth as a jwk unless you spend anywhere from a few minutes to an hour.
But you can get the worst of a batch feeling like the best of the batch pretty quickly : I got a great batch of hyperglides and they teeter in the lubed gateron yellow territory for smoothness quite consistently after varying levels of brrr-gunning while a good handful of them don't make scratch noise after some work. I would be interested to see how long it takes you be able to determine the difference in 1 bad switch.
Or, you know, you could just use the keyboard and let it break in naturally. Found the internet! Switch massage break-in, does it work? Blindfolded test. Posted by 4 months ago. Sort by: best.
